CHAPTER TWELVE

“This one seems right for her weight,” Theo said.

He was pointing to the fourth boxed car seat we had found in the store we were in. I was surprised and suspicious to see how the outskirts of the Denver suburbs were less destroyed. Theo saw it as a sign and was reassured we were doing the right thing by staying in the area. I reminded him we had little choice in the matter.

“I guess.” It was the fourth time I had said it, because that was all I had to add to the conversation.

I knew nothing about car seats. I could read a box like anyone else. But I didn’t know which type of harness was most effective, or if she should face forward or back. Though Gabby filled in the gap on that, insisting that their mother hadn’t turned Tina around in her car seat yet. According to two of the boxes we read, she could be turned around now that she was almost two. I just wanted whichever seat was easiest.

Gabby was easy. She walked directly to a display and pointed to the seat that looked like the one her mom had in their car. It was some sort of grow with your booster and I grabbed it from the display and put it in one cart we were pushing. But Gabby insisted she didn’t want the blue one from the display and Theo searched until he found a box with a pink one of the same make and model.

The searching for baby seats felt like it took half the day. Then there was the time it took to install the devil contraptions. There were so many straps and buckles, I didn’t know where to even start. So, I stood like a statue while Theo worked, reading instructions as he went.

Once that task was done, Gabby was excited to climb into her seat. She could buckle herself in and I could see immediately why she was happy. The straps didn’t hit her in the throat and she could see us much easier in the front seats. Tina didn’t enjoy being strapped in and she started to wail when we tried to test out the seat. I pulled her from the car, shushing her, looking around to make sure she didn’t bring an entire horde out of hiding.

We went back into the store and took our time through the food aisles, taking whatever we thought we could cook. I was excited to find a section of shelf stable food for preppers. I threw three large cans of powdered milk into my cart. It would be unlikely for us to finish those before we had to move on. Or someone made us move on. The nagging thought didn’t leave my brain.

Together as a group, we slowly went through the canned food areas. The jarred pasta sauce area had been cleared out and other jars were broken on the ground. The effect looked bloody, even though there were no bodies around.
